Showcase of Works

by Sunil Das

As well as being a very talented artist, Das is the only Indian artist who has received a national award while still in undergraduate studies (i.e., the Shiromani Kala Puraskar award).

Born in Kolkata in 1939, Das has always been keen on experimenting with and exploring different styles of painting. To date, he has gone through 9 or 10 different phases. One of these experimental phases was responsible for catapulting his reputation - and that was his creative depiction of horses. After seeing bull fights in Spain, such was the impact of the experience and the fascination it cultivated within him, that in the space of 10 years, he had created pictures of 7000 horses! (Yes. 7000!)

As well as receiving further honours and awards, Das’s works have been exhibited in a number of places on an international scale – some which include the Everson Museum in New York, Gallery Mohanjeet in Paris and the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi.
